What is Costa Rican food like?
White rice, black or red beans and lots of fruits and vegetables. As described in the previous question, Costa Rica’s typical food varies little from region to region and consists mainly on rice, beans, fruits, vegetables and some kind of meat. And don’t forget the coffee: Costa Rica is renowned for its amazing coffee!
You will find coffee is offered throughout the day and is a common courtesy to any visitor. Contrary to what many people expect because of its proximity to Mexico, Costa Rican food is not spicy. You will sometimes find a chile bottle at the table, but generally chile is not used too much. Instead, the staple sauce is Salsa Lizano, which is a thick vegetable-based sauce you’ll find everywhere in the country. While in Costa Rica, if you choose to eat like the locals, you’ll be getting a lot of very hearty meals!
