How much of Costa Rica’s energy comes from renewable sources?

Currently, Costa Rica produces 94% of its energy with renewable resources. Approximately 78% is hydroelectric, 13% geothermal, 3% wind and biomass and only the remaining 6% is derived from hydrocarbons. Always committed to protecting its natural treasures, the Costa Rican government has vowed to become carbon neutral by 2021, substituting any fossil-fueled energy sources with more hydroelectric plants. It’s refreshing to know that in a world where petroleum is so desired, Costa Rica has chosen not to develop the deposits it has. These are along its Caribbean coast, and exploiting them could potentially be devastating to the ocean life in the area. Once again, Costa Rica rises high by deciding to do what’s right for the environment.
