Art fairs in Samara, new films, Beatles concerts and more are on the agenda concerning recent events around Costa Rica in the latter part of January.

Art in Samara

Playa Samara’s Qué Lindo Feria de Arte will be hosted as of the 23rd of January at the Natural Center. Artists from the Nicoya Peninsula and the Guanacaste Area will be showcasing their latest endeavors on various mediums.

Coco Beach Book Sale

A book sale to benefit local animals through CARE (Coco Animal Rescue and Education); the Coco Beach book sale includes reasonably priced books and tasty baked confections. The event takes place at the Coldwell Bank parking lot in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica on January 24th & 25th. Website

A Renaissance Master Print Maker, Albrecht Dürer

Dürer is considered one of the most prominent painters, theorists and print makers of the Northern Renaissance period. His works are on showcase at the Central Bank Museum in San Jose, Costa Rica, through the 26th of April.

A Tribute to the Beatles at the Jazz Café

The Beagirls will be performing covers of the music of John, Paul, George and Ringo at the Jazz Café in San Pedro.

New Documentary: “The Devil’s Elbow”

A critically acclaimed documentary, El Codo del Diablo, will be playing at various theaters around Costa Rica. The film showcases the history of Costa Rica in Puerto Límon and the banana plantations that were the mainstay of the economy. The story follows a twelve year old boy named Setico as he tries to find out what became of his missing father.

“La Bayadère” The Temple Dancer

Celebrated for its scene The Kingdom of the Shades as being one of the premiere examples of classical ballet, the temple dancer was originally choreographed by a French man by the name of Marius Petipa to the music of an Austrian composer Ludwig Minkus. A live performance of the ballet will be shown at the Eugene O’Neill theater at the North American Cultural Center in Los Yoses on the 24th and 25th of January.

Ricardo Ávila and His Naïve Urban Observer

The artwork of Ricardo Ávila will be on display until March 29th at the Museum of Costa Rican Art. He operates in the same medium of Gaugin, and paints depictions of cities in his own characteristic format.

Mirage

A Costa Rican take on the Aldous Huxley classic, “The Doors of Perception,” this new film directed by José Miguel González examines reality through the context of a conflicted painter named Daniel. The film is showing at theaters around Costa Rica.

Family Wanted, The King’s Dream & The House of Spirits

Three plays are currently taking place at theaters around the central valley area. At La Fortina in Heredia, Costa Rica, Family Wanted by the Mexican playwright Berta Hiriart scrutinizes family life from all perspectives, and El Sueño de Unos Reyes (The King’s Dream) looks at nationhood and identity. The King’s Dream is a collaborative effort by Chilean and Costa Rican thespians, and plays at Gráfica Genesis in the Cathedral District of San José. Lastly, La Casa de los Espiritus (The House of Spirits), the masterpiece by Isabel Allende, will play through February 15th at Teatro Espressivo in Tres Rios.

The Costa Rican comedy by the creators of Media Docena (half-dozen) sketch comedy troupe will be playing at theaters around Costa Rica.
