The Beach of Drake Bay in Costa Rica
Drake Bay is the ecologist’s and globetrotter’s dream location. In Drake Bay, Costa Rica you can take it easy, go on one of the many tours or set off to discover the area yourself.
Believed at one point to be one of the places where Sir Francis Drake would lay anchor in the 1600s. The second person to circumnavigate the globe, it has been said that Drake Bay, Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula was one of the areas where the infamous British pirate had hidden treasure. Up until recent years Drake Bay wasn’t accessible by land, thus making the ecosystem unspoiled.
Drake Bay backs up to the Corcovado National Park and the area serves many tours into the wildlife preserve. Occupying a third of the peninsula, Corcovado National Park’s native species have been made higher priority by the national government to maintain. This makes the park a prime example of ancestral magnificence, and a natural expanse which a keen eye will find remarkable in the least.
To prepare for an excursion into the Drake Bay area you should consider bringing a compass and map (GPS might not pick up so readily here), hiking boots, long pants, a fishing pole, an Oru Kayak, binoculars and a quality camera. This is the kind of place that you’ll want to get lots of pictures. There are lots of tours and guides to help you in that purpose. Tours in the area include scuba diving, sport fishing, hiking, kayaking and bird watching expeditions.
In the Drake Bay locale plenty of hotels and eco-lodges can be found, and especially along the Sierpe River which serves as the only route of transportation during the rainy season. Drake Bay is reachable by a land bound vehicle in the dry season, and the driving time from San Jose is about four hours and twenty one minutes. From Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia, Costa Rica it is approximately six hours and fifty minutes to Bahia Drake. The international airport in Alajuela is around five hours and fifteen minutes away. In the rainy season reaching Drake Bay can be accomplished via the Drake Bay airport or by ship.
