The South Pacific and the Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, is expected to see big waves as a storm out at sea stirs up the salty brine over the upcoming long weekend.

This should come as good news to any surfers who plan on heading out to Jaco, Esterillos, Hermosa or some of the other beaches along the South Pacific coast. Even in the Northern Province of Guanacaste the shore will see an increase in wave height, but the flipside of the strong activity is rip currents.

Rip currents cause an estimated 150 deaths in the United States alone each year. If you aren’t a particularly good swimmer, you may want to avoid the water this weekend. The waves are expected to rise to eleven feet in some areas of the south Pacific Coastline. In the North Pacific, it is projected that waves will reach as high as six and half feet, and it’s likely to see seven foot waves at Cocos Island.

The small coastal storm is not predicted to get any larger over course of the next few days according to weather underground, but it will still cause a rise in swell over the weekend. A cold front is also expected for the region over the next few days.
