Costa Rica’s location makes it a flourishing oasis that covers an area of 51,100 square kilometers (19,730 square miles), with 50,660 square kilometers being land and 440 km consisting of water, making it slightly smaller than the US state of West Virginia. The terrain is mostly coastal plains separated by mountains ranges. The entire country hosts more than 100 volcanic cones, with the majority being major volcanoes.
