Many of the historical museums in Costa Rica are in the central valley, more specifically in the metropolitan area. The National Museums, The Jade and the Gold Museums of Costa Rica are the most visited for their exquisite and ancient collections.
Another highly visited museum in the capital is the Costa Rica Art Museum and it is located in La Sabana Metropolitan Park. This antique building used to be the establishment for what once was the first San Jose International Airport from 1940 until 1955 when it was transferred to where it is now at the Alajuela province.
Another amazing place with a large background that now serves as part of the large net of museums of Costa Rica is the Children’s Museum. The first museum of its class in Central America once used to be a grim and scary place and now is the most magical place full of inspiration and fun for children and adults to enjoy.
It was founded on the building that housed the former Central Penitentiary, which was created in 1909 and operated in complete abandonment for many years until, in 1991, the then First Lady of the Republic, Gloria Bejarano, wife of President Calderón, created the foundation that later built the museum for kids, which was opened on April 27, 1994.
In 1988, a few places inside the west wing of the building along with the facade were officially decreed as part of Costa Rica’s historical and architectural heritage, which is mostly why the building was only renovated on those sections. The purpose of the Center is to strengthen education and stimulate national scientific and technological development.
These and all other important Costa Rica museums are an example of the historical heritage built by the pioneers of this small country dedicated to preserve peace and its ecological footprint for generations to come.
