Recreation and Sports in Costa Rica

The sports in Costa Rica follow a line of tradition, however nowadays more unusual sports are being practiced in this country. One of the major sources of revenue this country has is tourism and of course sports have a great influence as part of most tourist attractions created for its visitors.

The number one national sport is undoubtedly soccer, although costa Ricans and many Latin American countries call it Futbol. The national team of Costa Rica did an amazing job in the past soccer world cup in Brazil, defeating or tying against some of the world authorities in this sport and classifying to the second round, something never achieved before in costa Rican history. You can attend any soccer game going on around the country mostly on Wednesday nights and Sundays.

Costa Rica is a land blessed with the most beautiful sceneries where sports and other activities can take a big part of your vacation experience. A personalized getaway plan can have anything you would like to do and see in this country. Many specialized tours are created for those looking to exercise in these stunning outdoors.

Surfing is one of the sports in Costa Rica that attracts more visitors. Most beaches offer awesome waves for any level of surfers. Plus there is plenty of board rentals and surfing schools available right at the coastline towns.

The great thing of sport fishing is that it is available along the coastline or inland in the Adrenal Volcano Lake or in some mountain rivers, anytime of the year. The location basically depends of the type of fishing you would like to do and the species you would like to catch. A good part of this activity will be enjoying the beautiful sights and amazing wildlife surrounding you. There are even hotels dedicated only to receive sport fishing enthusiasts that can certainly connect with fellow sport fishermen.

Another fine addition to sports in Costa Rica if golf. Many wouldn’t think of this country as a major destination for golfers, but one visit to some of the stunning golf courses in the country, especially those located close to those alluring beaches, will make you feel like you have found a hidden treasure.

There are other “touristic” sports in Costa Rica like, windsurfing, water rafting, diving, horseback riding, cycling, rappel, climbing, snorkeling and many more.

One that has grown very fast, especially in the past 3 years, is running, which is quickly becoming one of the most popular sports in Costa Rica. Every weekend there is one or two or more races going on in any Costa Rican town. The Tamarindo Beach Marathon attracts many athletes and is even part of some of the world’s most important marathon calendars. It is held every September and it covers 10K, 21K, 30K and Marathon distances. This location is one of the most touristic attractions for its excellent hotels and enchanting beaches. Another international race which is recognized and posted on the calendar of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races is the San Jose, Costa Rica International Marathon and half marathon. It is always celebrated on the first two weeks of December every year.

Along the amazing and diverse territories of this country and one of the richest biodiversity in the world, the options of sports in Costa Rica are endless. Practice your favorite sport in a land blessed by Mother Nature.
