Restaurants and Bars erupted with applause when Costa Rica beat Italy, but last week beating Greece brought this country to a place it had never been before. The streets shook as people crowded the streets…..the true Cinderella story had taken an undiscovered team and thrown them into the Limelights as they reached the top 8 position. Where did these Titans come from so quickly and seemingly out of nowhere?
Well the truth is Costa Rica is no newcomer to Soccer in any shape or form. In fact Soccer has been a large part of Costa Rica’s History for quite some time as they have made a name for themselves! Costa Rica’s Football team is actually the Current Central American champion, which they were rewarded following the win of the 13th tournament. They are the most successful Central American football team, after winning 7 championships in 1991, 1997,1999,2003,2005, 2007 AND 2013. This will be their third time qualifying for the World cup, as they also qualified in both 2002 and 2006.
The Costa Rican team made its first appearance back in September 1921, playing in Guatemala, and winning its first game 7-0 against El Salvador. From there the Costa Rican team was destined for success, ultimately defeating Guatemala 6-1 and claimed the trophy. In the 80’s they made it to the Summer Olympic Games twice in a row, first in Moscow in 1980 and the second time in Los Angeles in 1984. The Team barrelled through the 80’s,90’s,and 2000’s with a true passion for victory as they made a name for themselves all across Central America. They made it to the World Cup in Italy back in 1990, and from there on out, they were determined to have that title.
The Coach Jorge Luis Pinto has been heavily lauded as a major reason for the team’s success and has been called one of the best coaches in the league. The fans call themselves “The Ticos”, a name heavily proclaimed in their good luck Chant – “Oe, Oe Oe, Ticooos, Ticooos” and their good luck has truly been a story for the books! This year they have gone further than ever, toppling some of the biggest teams in the league, on their quest for the Cup, in a truly David vs. Goliath style.
