The Palmares Festival and Costa Rican Activities for January
Palmares Festival may be the biggest event happening in Costa Rica in January, but it isn’t the only one with art exhibits, plays and more taking place.
A number of events are taking place in Costa Rica through January and February. In the playhouse; Teatro Espressivo in Tres Rios, “La Casa de los Espiritus” (The House of Spirits) by Isabel Allende will be playing from January 15th to February 15th. The play was originally published as a novel in 1982 after being rejected by several publishing companies. Once published, it became an immediate success and catapulted its author into stardom.
In sports, the biggest annual tennis event for junior players; Copa del Café, will play through January 18th. This tournament backed by the International Tennis Federation and supported by tennis federations from around the world is held in San Jose at the Escazu Country Club.
A new comedy, “Maikol Yordan,” is open and will be playing for the foreseeable future at cinemas around Costa Rica. The story arc follows a foolhardy country boy on his escapades around the globe. The first hint is in his name.
An Exhibit honoring Juan Rafael Mora is on showcase through February 28th at the National Archives in Zapote. Mora was president from 1849 to 1859 and led a campaign against the filibustering William Walker. Walker had been trying to set up English speaking colonies in Central America, and had even made it as far as becoming the president of Nicaragua before he was put down by a coalition of Central American forces.
Finally, Festival Palmares will be carrying on from January 14th, 2015 to January 26th, 2015. This festival celebrating the agrarian nature of the country of Costa Rica has several events taking place including bullfights, a horse parade and beer guzzling to rival any good German festival.
