Turrialba Volcano vs. Irazu Volcano: Which one is better?
Irazu Volcano
Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. It is also quite close to Turrialba in the Province of Cartago, and the two mountains are often referred to as twin mountains. Much of the landscape is the same for both mountains, and the sparse vegetation found on Irazu makes many comment that hiking to the two craters at the viewing area is like walking on the moon. The arid and chilly viewing area where you can peer down into the two craters has a unique appeal, and it is also pretty easy to reach after a scenic drive up the mountain.
Irazu has a picnic area, a café and a small place to purchase food. The volcano is active, but it mostly produces a regular and non-violent stream of gas that is released from the fumarole without causing an extreme negative effect on the environment. The crater lake that can be viewed from above has various bubbles that form on the surface of the lake making a sea-foam green hue due to the acidity of the water.
