Is a driver’s license all I need to drive in Costa Rica and rent a car?

If you plan on renting a car, you need to be at least 25 years old, have a valid driver’s license issued by your government and have one of the major U.S. credit cards (debit cards are not accepted). The credit card is used to cover the liability deposit in case of an accident. Because the rental car freezes a certain amount from your account, debit cards aren’t accepted because banks take longer to “unfreeze” from debit cards than from credit cards (sometimes over a month!).
It’s also possible of course to take shared shuttles, taxis, private transportation and public buses, if you prefer.
