Costa Rica’s Fair Play Labs has produced the first ever video game released from Costa Rica: Color Guardians, and its development was the work of some 50 technicians.

Color Guardians follows regular themes for video games. There is a bad guy who has stolen something, and the good guys need to get it back. The bad guy, in this case, has taken all the color out of the world, and the good guys, who are represented by three aliens, must pass several levels in order to return color to the world. Color Guardians has been released for Playstation and on Steam.

Steam is an entertainment platform where games are bought, sold, shared and created online. Steam allows Color Guardians to be available on multiple platforms including PC, Mac, Linux or via gaming stations. Color Guardians represents the first original video game released by a Costa Rican video game firm, but not the first emulator to be released by a firm in Costa Rica.

Fans and critics alike are trying the game, and the reviews have been predominantly good. Those that haven’t found the game pleasing complain that it is too simple, but the fans have commented that the graphics are quite pleasing and the game is challenging. The jury is out on Color Guardians for now, but the game represents a milestone for the gaming industry in Costa Rica.

Color Guardians may represent the first original production to come from Costa Rica, but it isn’t the only game that has been designed by a gaming lab in Costa Rica. 2014 saw MOGA Studio of Costa Rica release a Pokemon emulator that was quite successful. Green Lava Studios coming out of Moravia had a 2D game which it released for PC named Fenix Rage, and the game has seen such a large number of good reviews that it will be finding its way to PlayStation later this year.

All games (Color Guardians, Fenix Rage & Micromon) are available online via PC, and Color Guardians is available for purchase thru PlayStation4 and Playstation Vita.
