A world unto itself, Cabo Matapalo and Cabo Matapalo Beach in Costa Rica can be described as such and so much more than you could ever imagine.

matapalo

Not a foot print in sight.

The Osa Peninsula

On the Osa Peninsula, birds of paradise and other species abound and live freely. There are caimans in the rivers and sloths in the trees. Close to Cabo Matapalo the Corcovado National Park is a prime location for viewing the multiplicity of species in the area. Tourists will also find a large number of tours and guides in the area of Corcovado.

Surf’s Up

In the secluded utopia of Cabo Matapalo, you’ll be able to relax, play and discover. The beaches are gorgeous, and the surf is quite good. The scenery in and around Cabo Matapalo is simply majestic, and you’ll want to bring your camera along with a swimsuit, hiking boots and trekking gear, a surfboard, sun block and extra cash.

More Than Just Surfing

Matapalo has break points for both experienced and beginning surfers. Some of the surf spots are in dangerous areas where you may not want to surf even if you are more experienced and definitely not if you aren’t experienced at all. The area also serves a few different tours such as a tree climbing tour with trees 60 meters in height and ATV tours of the cape.

Area Accommodations

The hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts of the area will oblige most budgets. Some of the area lodgings include Ojo del Mar, Ranchos Almendros, Casa Bambu and the wilderness resort Lapa Rios. There are also small apartments, villas and condos that can be rented for prolonged stays.

Getting There

Cabo Matapalo must be reached by crossing El Portón Blanco (The White Gate), unless you happen to own or employ a seaplane. Otherwise you can take a flight to the nearby city of Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica with Nature Air and Sansa Air, and a taxi or rental vehicle from there. Flights are about an hour to an hour and half. Driving to Matapalo from San Jose would take four hours and forty nine minutes. From Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela the trip will take five hours and forty five minutes, and Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia is about eight hours away.

The area is difficult to reach in the rainy season, and at times flights are the only possibility.
