The unsullied black sand granules at Cahuita Beach in Cauhita, Costa Rica are the remnants of volcanic eruptions from ages prior milled from lava in the salty brine.
Cahuita is in the eastern province of Limon, and the beach is therefore situated on the tranquil Caribbean Sea. The culture of the Caribbean coast is based in roots both from Latin and Jamaican sources, thereby making the food, dance and music of the area in contrast to that of the Pacific Coast. To the north of Cahuita is the city of Limon, and to the south is the smaller town of Puerto Viejo.
The beach and town of Cahuita are very close to Cahuita National Park where can be found a large variety of tropical birds, monkeys, sloths, and the ocean life in the rocky outcropping of the sea has corals, mollusks, crustaceans and many species of fish. To explore this landscape would be to the delight of all those involved, and anyone with a sense of adventure would be please to trek through the forest and seashore here. The price of admission to Cahuita National Park is free making it the only park that doesn’t charge an entrance and accepting donations instead.
The dirt roads and laid back attitude of the town of Cahuita will put you at ease almost instantaneously. This countryside locale has a certain ambience and vibe that can send you into a state of calm from which you may not wish to return. While in Cahuita you will have to give the local crepes a try. They are often made from locally grown bananas, strawberries and locally made chocolate.
