Helping Out Through the Holidays in Costa Rica

Communities, Teachers, Students and Parents are coming together to make arrangements for the less fortunate in the holiday season.

As the summer rolls into Costa Rica and the school year comes to a close, a number of students are not looking to take a break. For the holiday season and coming break, many communities from the Turrialba area to small neighborhoods such as Rincon Grande in the west of San Jose Province are raising funds in various ways such as selling a cow or teaching yoga, and planning events and classes that will engage young underprivileged students in English intensive programs where foreign and local teachers will lend a hand in the education of these passionate students.

Organizations such as JumpStart Costa Rica, the US Peace Corps and the Costa Rica Multilingüe Foundation are putting together concerted efforts to provide the funding, materials and people to make the multi-located English camps a reality. Individuals and small organizations in the United States, from Arizona to Oregon, are making plans to come and help teach and participate, as well. All of the individuals and organizations that are coming together to help bring a little light to people who do not have nearly so many opportunities as others are doing the kind of good work that comes with no monetary reward in return.

The students may come from backgrounds and situations that are at once difficult and disadvantaged, but they are eager to make a turn for the better. Many of these students are young pregnant mothers that want to provide something superior to their current situation for the unborn babies that they will be bringing into the world. Mothers that are conceivably entering the third trimester of their pregnancy are foregoing a vacation to pursue an education that could put them in a healthier position to provide for their growing family.

All of the communities, organizations, teachers, volunteers and students that are putting on the English camps may not be rewarded with material wealth, but they will gain something of far more value. They will be making the future a little brighter for those that need it and seek it.
